문체론에 대한 논의는 실체중심의 소설론이 가지는 한계를 타개할 방법이 될 수 있다. 소설은 실체이면서 정서적 가치가 착색된 언어를 가진다. 소설의 장르적 속성과 복합성, 다면성이 소설언어의 복합성을 가져온다. 그러한 복합성과 층위간의 대화적 관계를 염두에 둘 때, 소설 언어는 다른 모든 영역의 언어와 대화적 관계에 놓이며, 현실을 매개하는 소재로서 작용한다.소설의 언어에 대한 문체론 연구로는 이인모, 정한모, 구인환, 김상태, 김정자, 이상신, 황도경 등의 연구를 들 수 있다. 또한 국어학 분야에서의 문체론에 대한 연구로는 박갑수, 심재기 등의 연구를 들 수 있다. 그러나 소설의 언어는 부단히 변화하기에 이러한 연구의 결과는 문체론의 최종 결론일 수 없으며, 소설의 문체론은 끊임없이 소설언어의 양상을 반영하고 방법론을 다양화해야한다. 문체의 개념에 대해서는 몇 가지 고정관념이 있지만, 그것은 그 자체로서보다는 장르로 분화되어야 하고, 소설의 본질 조건에 맞아야 한다. 소설 문체는 소설이라는 구체적 텍스트에 일관성을 부여하는 언어적 속성과 운용방법의 총체로 규정될 수 있다. 소설읽기는 작품의 의미, 의미의 해석, 의미의 내면화로 이어지는 해석의 과정이다. 이 과정에서 문체는 해석에 필요한 부분과 전체의 상호조회를 해주는 거멀못이다. 독자는 독서의 과정에서 자신의 기억과 텍스트 간의 연관성을 찾아 한 편의 완결성 있는 작품을 형성한다. 그 과정에서 작용하는 일관성 있는 규칙이 문체이며, 이것은 독자가 텍스트를 전유할 수 있게 하는 힘이다.문체론의 학문적 성과 가운데 하나는, 문학 안에서 언어를 그 운용주체와 절리된 상태에서 객관적 대상으로 바라보던 관점을 변화시켰다는 점이다. 또한 문체론은 내용과 표현이라는 이분법적 사고의 한계를 인식하게 하였으며, 문학의 자율성의 인식에도 기여했다. 앞으로도 문체론은 작가, 작품, 장르 등으로 다양한 분화를 이어갈 것이며, 이러한 분화로 문체론 사이에 대화관계가 형성됨으로써 더욱 생산성 있는 문체론이 전개될 것이다.

im of this paper is to establish a theory of stylistics as a method of novelistic scholarship. The presupposition is that the stylistic study of novel is supposed to be an authentic method to solve limit of substantial study of novel. The test of novel is constructed with emotionally coated (tinted) language. The characteristics of the novel will be defined by such generic characteristics as the complexity, multiplied strata of meaning, and the language formulating novel. The novelistic text is related with other languages of extra novelistic texts. The stylistic study of the novelistic language has been searched for a longtime by the scholars of literature and linguistics. The languages of the novel change in their genre and with the influences of the socio-cultural change. The method of study thus must change at every stage of the period. The concept of novelistic style must be stratified by (the essential of) the rules of genre. The style of novel can be defined as a linguistic attribute ordering the coherence in the novelistic text and the total manipulation method of the language in the novel. The style of the novel works as the marker of interpretation of the text by the readers of the novel, cross-referring parts and the whole of the novelistic text. The scholastic ability of stylistic study is expected to correct the misconception that the substance of language can be separated from the subject of language user. Also it will overcome the binary oppositional concept of literature that the text is constructed from contents and expressions. The method of discourse style flourished the concept of autotelic nature of literary text. In the future the stylistic study will expand concerning the author, work, and genre. And with this result, the stylistic study will be a prominent literary method.
