1940년대 전반기 『국민문학』에 수록된 좌담회는 ‘국민문화’ 담론 형성에 초점을 맞춘 문화선전 장치였다. 그러나 말하기 형식에서 비롯되는 우발성과 식민지의 ‘국민문화’라는 논제가 지닌 모순성으로 인해 좌담회에는 갈등과 대립의 흔적이 새겨진다. 초기 좌담회에서는 조선적 특수성과 ‘국민문학’의 관계가 논란의 핵심으로 떠오른다. 일본인 참석자들은 진정한 ‘국민문학’ 수립을 위해 조선적인 것의 폐기를 주장한 반면, 조선인 참석자들은 조선적 독창성이 ‘국민문학’에 기여할 수 있다고 주장하며 지방문화론을 이론화하고자 했다. 그러나 조선적인 것은 민족주의로 해석될 수 있다는 점에서 언제나 의혹과 경계의 시선을 받았다. 반대로 조선적인 것을 삭제하고 일본 정신을 지나치게 강조하는 태도도 환영받지 못하기는 마찬가지였다. 이런 상황은 ‘국민문학’ 창작 부진으로 이어졌고 위기에 처한 ‘국민문화’론은 조선의 ‘현재’가 아니라 ‘과거’에서 타개책을 마련하게 되었다. 결국 조선적인 것은 고대 역사의 틀 속에서만 평화롭게 논의될 수 있던 셈이다. 이 시점에서 조선인 참석자들은 오히려 완벽하고 철저한 내선일체를 주장함으로써 조선의 현재에서 식민지성을 제거하는 방법을 찾고자 했다. 이런 과정으로 볼 때 『국민문학』 좌담회는 식민지의 ‘국민문학’이 근본적 제약과 견제 속에서 출발했으며 갈등과 불일치를 존재조건으로 한다는 점을 증명해준다.
In the first half of 1940's, the symposium put in "Kook-Min-Mun-Hak" shows between what kinds of conflicts and tensions the discussion of 'Kook-Min-Mun-Hak/Mun-Hwa'('National literature/culture') appeared and developed. In the early stage of the symposium, the relationship between 'Kook-Min-Mun-Hak' and Choseon-Like Thing, rose as a key point of the issues. While Japanese participants insisted to abolish Choseon-Like Thing in order to establish the real "Kook-Min-Mun-Hak", Choseon participants insisted that the Choseon's creativity can contribute to "Kook-Min-Moon-Hak" and actively tried to literaturize Choseon's lives and feelings. But it was watched in a suspicious and cautious way in that Choseon-Like Thing can be interpreted as a nationalism. On the contrary, the attitude was not welcomed either that excluded Choseon-Like Thing and emphasized Japanese spirit too much. This situation led to poor progress of 'Kook-Min-Mun-Hak'. 'National Culture' theory in danger made a way to escape in 'the past' not in 'the present' of Choseon. It was about trying to find a common history of Japan and Choseon in Three Kingdom's period, and anyway the Choseon-Like Thing could be discussed only in the frame of ancient history. At that time, Choseon people tried to find a way to eliminate the colonialism in Choseon's present rather by insisting the perfect and thorough ‘Ne-Sun-Il-Chea(內鮮一體)’. But Japanese defeat left this idea in a permanent unfinished business. Like this, the records around Choseon-Like Thing shows the last journey of colony Choseon's literary men who tried to find any possibility between speciality and generality, people and nation.
