이 글은 이상의 소설 <동해(童骸)>를 동양의 노장사상과 관련해 해명고자 하였다. 노장사유와 이상문학의 연관성은 이상의 동양지향성이 갖는 근대성 비판에 있다. 노장의 이야기들에서 눈(‘目’)은 시각 작용뿐만 아니라 항상 밖을 향해 내달리는, 감각의 만족이나 이상을 향한 인위적인 노력이나 행위를, 배(‘腹’)는 소화 작용만이 아니라 인간의 가장 기본적이고도 직접적인 생존 조건이 담겨 있는 곳, 곧 문화적 가치 체계가 적용되기 이전의 공간을 상징한다. 노장에 의하면 ‘눈’은 빠른 체계와 권력집중으로 타자를 지배하는 현대문명을 상징하는 데 비해, ‘배’라는 공통감각은 죽임의 양식이 지배적인 현대문명에 상생상극을 가져올 수 있는 살림의 양식이다. 소설 <동해>는 이러한 노장의 ‘배’에 해당하는 공통감각에 기초해 삼각관계를 그려낸다. 구체적으로 <동해>는 임이를 사이에 둔 나와 윤의 삼각관계의 정경을 “觸角으로 圖解”해 놓은 작품이다. 이상이 삼각관계의 정경을 도해하는 데 사용한 ‘촉각(觸角)’은 근대이후 분화되어 시각을 중심으로 재편된 감각 중의 하나인 촉각이 아니라 이론화되기 이전의 근원적인 감각으로서의 촉각, 종합적인 지각으로서의 공통감각이다. 또한 이상은 나와 임이의 논쟁을 통해 식민지 근대의 현실이 연애의 문제에 있어서도 19세기와 20세기가 충돌하는 혼란스런 국면임을 드러내고 있으며 그 갈등의 국면을 열어둠으로써 삶의 문제를 독자에게도 경험하게 한다.
