본고는 장편가문소설 <부장양문록>을 대상으로 가부장적 가족구조 속에서의 여성의 삶에 대한 인식과 그 존재 방식에 대해 살핀 것이다. 논의 결과 <부장양문록>은 가부장적 가족구조 내부에 잠재된 모순과 한계를 여실히 드러내는 한편, 그 속에서 여성이 어떤 방식으로 존재해야 하는지에 대한 진지한 고민을 담고 있는 소설임을 구체적으로 밝혀내었다. 고소설에 등장하는 여성 인물들 가운데는 가부장적 가족구조의 유지와 확대 재생산에 충실한 여성의 모습이 일반적이다. 그러나 <부장양문록>의 여주인공 장수정금은 가부장적 가족구조 속에 내재된 근본적인 모순을 바탕으로 하여 산생된 인물 유형이다. 여성의 삶을 억압하는 家父長의 존재와 그와의 관계 속에서 삶의 존재 방식을 규정짓는 장수정금의 모습에서 가부장제 이데올로기의 한계나 모순을 포착해낼 수 있다. 한편 <부장양문록>은 가부장적 가족구조 내부에 잠재되어 있는 갈등을 장수정금의 회과를 통해 극복하고 있다. 이 점에서 가부장제 질서 자체가 지니고 있는 모순을 윤리적 이데올로기로 봉합했다는 혐의를 피할 수 없을 것이다. 하지만 가부장적 가족구조 속에서 당당한 사회적 주체로서 살아가지 못하고, 평생을 규방에 갇혀 늙어간 여주인공의 깊은 회한을 그려보임으로써 작가는 가부장적 가족구조 속에서의 여성의 존재 방식에 대한 비판적 인식을 확연히 드러내고 있다. 본고는 <부장양문록>에 대한 작품론적 논의를 심화하는 한편 가부장적 가족구조 속에서 여성의 삶이 어떤 양상으로 전개되는지를 살폈다. 그간 가부장제 이데올로기에 대한 비판적 인식을 표출한 여성 인물에 대한 논의는 여성영웅소설을 위주로 전개되었다. 본고의 논의를 통해 이후 장편가문소설을 아우르는 연구가 활발히 이어지기를 기대한다.


This thesis has examined recognition of female life and its method of existence in a patriarchal family structure with the object of a full-length novel of one’s clan of Bujangyangmunrok. As the result of discussion, Bujangyangmunrok has revealed contradiction and limits inherent within a patriarchal family structure while it is a novel specifically revealing serious agonies regarding how female have to exist within such a structure. Majority of female appearing in ancient novels are in general female who were faithful in maintenance and expansion re-production of a patriarchal family structure. However, a heroine in the novel of Bujangyangmunrok, Chang, Su-Jeong-Geum was a type of person produced based on fundamental contradiction inherent in a patriarchal family structure. In a figure of Chang, Su-Jeong-Geum regulating method of existence within existence of a patriarch suppressing female life and its relationship with him, limits and contradiction of a patriarchal system could be captured. On the other hand, Bujangyangmunrok overcomes conflicts inherent within a patriarchal family structurethrough repentance of Chang, Su-Jeong-Geum. In this point, it cannot avoid an allegation that contradiction inherent in a patriarch system was patched with ethical ideology. However, the author reveals critical recognition method of existence of female within a patriarchal family structure through profound repentance of the heroine who had become old in her entire life by being imprisoned in a lady’s room without living as a social subject stately within a patriarchal family structure. This thesis expanded discussion about the novel piece of Bujangyangmunrok while the novel examined how female life was deployed within a patriarchal family structure. Until now, discussions of female who expressed critical recognition about a patriarchal ideology were deployed mainly focusing on novels of heroines. I hope researches on full-length novels will be carried out actively in the future through discussions of this thesis.
