본고는『西遊見聞』에 나타난 商業 관련 어휘들을 범주별로 나누어 검토하고 그 특성과 사용 양상을 검토하여 어휘적 특성과 맥락적 의미를 고찰하고, 이를 바탕으로 텍스트를 이해함으로써 유길준의 근대 지향성을 살피는 데에 목적을 둔다.『西遊見聞』은 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화, 교육, 복지 등 다양한 분야에서 서양 근대 국가의 체제와 제도를 소개함으로써 조선의 근대화에 기여하려는 유길준의 뚜렷한 목적의식 하에서 저술된 텍스트이다. 유길준은 근대화의 매개이자 결과로서 특히 商業을 매우 중요하게 여겼다. 따라서 商業 관련 내용들이 텍스트 전체에 걸쳐 지속적으로 나타난다. 유길준은 텍스트에서 신구 商業 관련 어휘를 두루 활용하여 근대적 상업론을 펼치고, 서양 상업의 발달상을 소개하고 있다. 본고는 이러한 商業 관련 어휘들을 ‘상업 일반’, ‘상거래’, ‘국제 무역’, ‘금융 및 법률’ 등 크게 네 가지 범주로 유형화하고, 다시 이를 몇 가지로 세분화하여 각 어휘들의 출현 빈도와 활용 양상을 실체적으로 규명하였다. 그리고 이 어휘들의 맥락적 의미를 고구하였다. 그리고 이를 토대로 商業에 대한 유길준의 시각에 대해서도 분석을 해 보았다. 이를 통해 유길준이 商業 관련 어휘들을 적절히 활용하여 상업의 중요성, 상인의 중요성, 서양 상업과 조선 상업의 비교, 상업 발달을 위한 정부와 상인의 직분 등을 설파한 부분을 검토하였다. 그 결과 유길준의 근대 지향성이란, 조선이 근대적 상업 발달을 바탕으로 서양 근대 국가의 수준에 도달해야 한다는 것임을 알 수 있었고, 이 근대 지향성이 텍스트에 짙게 투영되어 있음을 확인하였다.
This paper aims to study on the lexical analysis of Seoyugyeonmun(1895) especially on the commercial terms and to examine the Yu Giljun’s understanding and acceptance of western culture on the time of enlightenment. To this end, at first, the commercial terms can be classified according to the component parts of commercial affairs, i.e. general commerce, commercial transaction, international trade and commercial laws. These terms are analyzed the frequency, width of private properties, use patterns and so on. The commercial terms are appeared repeatedly in several chapters of Seoyugyeonmun(1895) and many new words that are not familiar to the Koreans at that time are introduced to emphasize the necessity of the flowering of civilization. The main perspectives of Yu Giljun can be summarized as follows. An introduction to the western’s advanced commercial system, a comparison between western and Joseon Dynasty and significance of commerce, these points reflect Yu Giljun’s identity as an member of enlightenment party.
