백석의 시에는 많은 인물이 등장할 뿐 아니라 인물의 제시 방법 또한 독특하다. 「모닥불」 「澡塘에서」 「여우난곬族」 등에는 다양한 인물이 등장하여 시의 중요한 국면을 이루고 있으며, 「木具」와 「국수」는 사물을 전면에 부각시켜, 그 사물과 깊이 교감하는 인물들의 심성을 드러내고 있다. 「여우난골族」 , 「모닥불」, 「澡塘에서」 등은 그 인물들이 가지고 있는 이질적 속성들을 폭력적으로 무화시키지 않고 평화롭게 공존시키고 있다는 점에서 공통점을 가지고 있으나, 인물이 등장하는 공간은 매우 다른 양상을 보이고 있다. 「여우난골族」의 무대는 연극적 공간이면서 축제의 공간이다. 또한 이틀이라는 시간의 흐름을 가지는 4차원의 공간이다. 「모닥불」은 평면적이고 추상적인 공간에서 전개된다. 등장인물들은 호칭에 부여된 위상만을 지닌 채 모닥불을 중심으로 평면에 동심원을 그리고 있다. 「모닥불」은 이질적인 존재들을 추상적 공간에 배치하는 것만으로도, 서로 처지와 입장이 다른 인물들이 따뜻하게 공존하는 장면을 연출한다. 「澡塘에서」는 이국의 대중목욕탕이라는 특별한 공간을 배경으로 하고 있다. 이 3차원의 공간에 함께 있는 다양한 인물들은 각각의 외양과 행동을 보이며 존재할 뿐 화자와 어떤 교섭도 가지지 않는다. 화자는 스스로의 이들의 사상과 일상에 대한 깊은 사유를 통하여 이질감을 극복하고, 이들과 동류의식을 느끼는 단계에까지 나아가게 된다. 사물과 인물의 교감을 바탕으로 하고 있는 작품으로는 「木具」와 「국수」 등이 있다. 「목구」의 주인공은 ‘水原白氏 定州白村’ 사람들이다. ‘목구’는 정성껏 제사를 지내는 과정을 통하여, 조상과 후손을 매개하는 존재가 된다. 그리고 더 나아가 이 세상 모든 존재의 “거룩한 아득한 슬픔을 담는 것”이 된다. 「국수」의 주인공은 ‘국수’를 함께 즐기는 ‘마을 사람들’이다. 국수의 의미는 ‘이것은 무엇인가’ 거듭 되물으면서 다양하게 변주된다. 그리고 의존명사 ‘것’의 의미와 기능을 통해, 국수를 구체적인 사물로 그려내기도 하고, 새로운 의미를 부여하여 추상적이고 정신적인 차원으로 전환시키기도 한다.
