읽기 교육의 역사를 거슬러보면, 읽기 교수법은 해독(decoding), 질문하기(asking questions)를 강조했는가 하면, 1980년대 이후는 독해 기능(compre- hension skill), 상호거래 접근법(transactional approach) 등이 주요 원리로 제기되었고, 현재는 균형잡힌 접근법(a balanced approach)이 유행하고 있다. 특히 균형잡힌 접근법은 기능과 지식의 균형, 읽기와 쓰기의 통합, 직접교수법과 실제적인 언어 경험 등을 강조함으로써 읽기 교육의 방법론을 확대하는 계기가 된다. 이외에도 읽기 교육에서 아동 문학의 중요성이 다시 제기되기도 한다. 요컨대, 읽기는 통합적이고 거시적인 교육의 방향으로 변화되고 있다. 즉 홀리스틱 접근과 균형잡힌 접근에 의해 읽기 교육이라는 용어의 의미역이 확대되었고, 그 방법론도 문학을 포함하고, 언어 지식과 언어 기능을 포함한 체계적인 일련의 과정으로서 발전하고 있다. 이로 인해 읽기 교육 방법을 명확한 기준에 따라 분류하고 구분하는 것이 더욱 어렵게 된 것도 사실이다. 그러나 읽기를 가르치면서 교사가 무엇에 중점을 둘 것이며, 개별 학생들에게 가장 효과적인 교수-학습 방법이 무엇인지를 고려할 수만 있다면, 교수-학습 방법은 다양하게 응용가능하며, 또한 다양한 이론으로 발전될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

The purpose of this paper is to review methods of teaching reading, comparing it with foreign reading theories. History of teaching reading shows switches of focus in teaching reading, in that decoding, asking questions, comprehension skill, transactional approach, and now, balanced approach. Specially, balanced reading approach is popular and very important. And holistic approaches emphasize use of children’ literatures in reading instruction. And reading instruction is considered as an active process, a social process, an emotional process, and a cognitive process. In fact, success of reading instruction depends on awareness and design of teaching- learning, what works and what needs.
