본 논문에서는 해방 이후 국정 국어 교과서에 수록된 현대 제재 중 특히 문학 제재에 초점을 두어 수록 양상을 검토하였다. 서정 갈래는 현대시와 현대 시조로 나눌 수 있는데, 해방 이후 7차 교육과정기까지 현대시 제재는 전 시기에 걸쳐 다양한 작품들이 선택되었다. 김소월, 김영랑, 박목월, 이육사와 윤동주의 작품들이 정전에 지위에 올랐다. 현대 시조는 퇴화하는 갈래로서의 성격을 분명하게 드러내며 특정 시조 시인, 즉 김상옥에게 집중되는 경향이 확연하다. 서사 갈래는 현대 소설에 초점을 두고 살펴보았다. 건국기 선택된 다수의 현대 소설들은 1차 교과서에서 사라졌으며 1차 - 4차 교과서에서는 소설 제재가 크게 줄어든다. 7차 교과서에서 현대 소설 제재의 선택폭은 이전과는 달리 크게 확장되었다. 현대 소설 제재 중 정전의 지위에 오른 것은 황순원의 <소나기>이다. 극 갈래 제재 중 4회 이상 수록된 작품은 유치진의 <원술랑>이 유일하다. 외국의 서정 갈래가 교과서에 집중적으로 수록되었던 시기는 건국기, 2차, 3차 교육과정기이다. 4차 이후로는 워즈워스의 <뻐꾸기에 부쳐>를 제외하고는 선택된 제재가 전무하다. 외국의 서사 갈래 제재 중 호손의 <큰 바위 얼굴>과 알퐁스 도데의 <별>은 1차-6차 교과서에 반복 수록됨으로써 정전의 지위를 획득한다. 외국의 극 갈래로는 실러의 <빌헬름 텔>과 오 헨리의 <마지막 한 잎>이 각각 3회씩 반복 수록되었다.
