이 글은 미군정기 국어교육계의 성립 과정을 실증적으로 검토하면서 그것의 역사적 의미를 논하였다. 당시 국어교육계는 다른 사회적 영역과 달리 좌우대립 구조에서 상대적으로 거리를 두고 있었다. 국어교육계의 주도세력인 조선어학회가 좌우합작을 공식적 노선으로 추진하였기 때문이다. 하지만 조선어학회 일부 회원들이 전개한 급진적 어문정책을 놓고 국어교육계 내부에서 갈등이 증폭되면서 좌우합작 노선이 붕괴하게 되었다. 그것을 단적으로 보여주는 사건이 조선말큰사전 간행 기념회였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 1949년까지 좌익작가의 작품 수록은 국어교육계에서 쟁점화되지 않았다. 오히려 그러한 좌우합작은 국어교육의 토대를 굳건히 하는 방법으로써 적극적으로 선택되었다. 이러한 사실들은 국어교육의 원형적 노선이 무엇이었는지 말해준다는 점에서 해방이후 국어교육사에 던지는 의미가 크다. 국어교육계는 좌우대립이 국어교육에 결코 유리한 것이 아니라고 판단하고 추진했다. 이에 비추어 보면, 단독정부 수립 이후의 국어교육은 국어교육의 이상적 형태라 볼 수 없다. 불행히도 전후의 국어교육은 국어교육적 관점의 독자성을 상실하고 정치적 이념으로 모든 사태를 판단하는 우를 범했기 때문이다. 그러한 사고방식은 심지어 미군정기에까지 역투사(逆投射)되어, 마치 좌우대립이 당시의 국어교육계에 만연해 있었던 것으로 착시(錯視)하도록 하고 있다. 따라서 미군정기 국어교육계의 구조와 의미에 대해 역사적 평가를 내리고자 할 때에는 이러한 착시와 오류로부터 거리를 둘 필요가 있다고 판단된다.


This thesis has verified the process of establishing Korean Education Community in the period of American Military Administration. And I also discuss the historical meaning of it. Unlike other social field, the conflict of ideology was relatively trivial in Korean Education Community of those days. That is because 조선어학회 propelled the collaboration of the two ideology as a official line. However, things were changed. Several members of the meeting had tried to practice radical language policy. That brought about troubles in Korean Education Community. Finally, the collaboration line came to collapse. The memorial day of publishing ‘조선말큰사전’ clearly showed that. While the political outlook was just like that, the fact that leftist writers' was on the list of the textbook has not been issued. On the contrary, that situation was positively selected as a way of establishing the foundation of Korean Education. These facts are historically meaningful in that those could imply the typical line of the past Korean Education. Korean Education Community of those days concluded that the conflict of ideology would not advantageous to Korean Education. Considering all this, we could not regard the Korean Education of independent government as an ideal state. That is because the post-war Korean Education was mistaken everything for political ideology, lacking in independent educational perspective. That kind of thinking has also inscribed into the viewpoint of the period of American Military Administration. This is so natural to us, so we have misconception about the historical judgement: the conflict of ideology was widespread in those days! So, if we are to appreciate the structure and the meaning of Korean Education Community in the period of American Military Administration, we should be careful not to commit this kind of error again.
