본고는 현대 사회에 있어서 이사와 관련한 속신의 양상과 그것이 의미하는 바가 무엇인지를 알아보고, 전통의 현대적 지속과 변용이라는 측면에서 현대의 이사 관련 속신이 갖는 의의에 대해서 생각해보고 하였다. 전통적 농경사회에서 근대 산업사회로 바뀌면서 현대의 이사 관련 속신도 그 양상을 달리하고 있다. 과거에는 까다롭게 집터를 고르고, 이사 가기 전과 후에 다양한 속신들을 행함으로서 이사 자체를 매우 중요한 문제로 인식하게 하였다. 하지만 직장과 직업에 따라 이리저리 옮겨 다녀야만 하는 현대인들에게 이사는 이제 평범한 일상이 되어버렸다. 따라서 현대인들의 생활양식에 맞는 몇 개의 이사 관련 속신을 제외하고 전통적인 이사 속신은 거의 사라져버렸다. 하지만 이사 속신이 무조건 사라지고만 있는 것은 아니다. 새롭게 집의 매매와 관련한 속신이 생성되어 활발히 전승되고 있는 것이다. 현대에 와서 새롭게 생성된 이사 관련 속신을 보면, ‘장사가 잘 되는 집의 가위를 훔쳐와서 현관에 거꾸로 매달아둔다.’거나 ‘지보라고 쓴 글자를 안방 네 벽에 붙여놓는다.’거나 ‘빗자루를 현관에 거꾸로 세워놓는다.’ 등이 있다. 하지만 이러한 속신들을 자세히 들여다보면, 과거 우리 조상들이 행했던 여러 민속신앙에 근거하고 있음을 알 수가 있다. ‘장사 잘되는 집의 가위 훔쳐서 달기’의 경우는 정초에 행했던 디딜방아 액막이굿이나 복토 훔치기의 풍속과, ‘지보라고 쓴 종이를 안방 네 벽에 붙이기’나 ‘빗자루 거꾸로 세워놓기’와 같은 경우는 각각 풍요를 상징하는 여근상징과 벼에 그 맥이 닿고 있는 것이다. 민속은 생활양식에 따라 조금씩 변화한다. 이사 관련 속신의 경우도 전통을 충실하게 전승하고 있기도 하고, 새롭게 생성하기도 한다. 하지만 새롭게 형성된 속신도 역시 전통에 맥을 두고 있는 사례들을 통해, 전통적인 민간신앙에 대한 현대인들의 뿌리 깊은 의식의 단면을 확인할 수가 있다.

I also try to think of the meaning of the today’s folk faiths related to moving in, focusing on modern continuance and change of tradition. Today, the customs related to moving in has been far more simplified than that of the past. That is why modern people have to move in frequently due to the changes of their work places, which makes them have difficulty in following all the customs related to moving in, and several customs are not suitable to the life style of modern people. There are new folk faiths among today’s folk faiths of moving in as well as the same ones as the past folk faiths. The new magics generally have relation to the success of dealing the dwelling. These phenomena seem to reflect the feature of modern people’s lives to frequently move in. The representative folk faith of those modern folk faiths is “to steal scissors of those who sell goods well and to hang them at the entrance with upside down”. This seems to be related to our traditional new year’s customs, “tread mill play” or “stealing the fortune earth”.
