경기도 안성시는 지난 10년간 남사당 바우덕이를 지역의 문화적 표상으로 구축하기 위해 적지 않은 노력을 기울여왔다. 그 결과 바우덕이는 안성을 대표하는 아이콘으로 자리를 잡게 된다. 하지만 최근 바우덕이라는 인물의 역사적 허구성을 둘러싼 논쟁이 거세게 일고 있어 주목된다. 2009년에 본격화한 이 논쟁은 지역 축제와 지역사회의 문화적 표상에 대한 안성시의 과도한 선택과 집중, 그에 따른 지나친 예산 낭비와 졸속 행정 등과 같은 지역 정부의 행정 전반에 대한 비판과 연동하는바, 지역의 문화적 표상과 그 구축 문제가 현실의 정치사회적 맥락과 얼마나 깊숙이 연루되어 있는지를 보여주는 호례(好例)라고 할 수 있겠다. 이에 본고에서는 구성주의적 관점에서 그 논쟁의 내용과 관련 주체들의 다양한 대응 방식을 천착함으로써 지역의 문화적 표상이 구축되어 가는 역동적인 과정을 고찰하고자 노력했다. 아울러 논쟁 과정에서 표출된 다양한 수사들 속에서 민속학자들이 구성한 민속학적 지식이 어떻게 전유되는지를 살펴보았다. 이 논쟁은 아직도 해결의 기미를 보이고 있지 않지만, 적어도 그것이 지역의 문화적 표상을 설득 가능한 지식으로 구축하는 데 기여했음을 드러내고자 했다.
This thesis focused on the debate about authenticity of Baudugi, that was open to the public through the regional newspaper, and examined in that process how the regional cultural symbol was formed dynamically, from a constructivist standpoint. There was at times the criticism of historical fabrication of Baudugi since Anseong Namsadang Baudugi Festival was held. But after 2009, the criticism flamed leap to the serious debate on internet site of civil petition of municipal office and internet newspaper. The regional government concentrated excessively upon the festival and regional cultural symbol, and its conduct offered to the residents a room for discontent and criticism. The debate opening to the public was aiming not only at the historical fabrication of Baudugi directly, but also at excessive waste of the budget, the government administration’s helter-skelter approach, moreover the regional identity. The debaters quarreled with the government about the proper representation of regional identity, in which they could secure the field for debate through Baudugi. It is needless to say that the debate was related to the context of practical politics. But this paper concentrated upon the contents and responses and followed to the process that the cultural symbol was formed in that debate. Especially this paper gave attention to how folkloristic knowledge made by folklorist was applied selectively as diverse rhetoric of debate. The debate shows no sign of being solved yet, but it contributed at least to form the regional cultural symbol as reasonable knowledge.
