It is well known that a case assigner and assignee should be linearly adjacent to be properly licensed. This kind of local relationship has been captured in various ways in the literature. For example, Pollock (1989) proposed the difference in the strength of the functional category Infl may be parameterized between English and French to the effect that in French an adverb can appear between the verb and its object, while it is not possible in English. However, this line of argument does not seem to capture the linear adjacency between, say, copula and its complement. This paper points out some empirical problems of the above mentioned case-based approach to the phenomenon of linear adjacency and propose an alternative account based on some discourse functional considerations. That is, it proposes that a natural constituent cannot be separated except for discourse functional reasons.
