This paper is an integrated approach to the subject-verb agreement mismatch in English. This paper argues that the mismatch in subject-verb agreement is best explained under the assumption that the confusion in the part of the processor is the main cause of the mismatch. This confusion analysis is recast in the form of multiple activation under the Minimalist framework. It is also argued that the multiple activation analysis is preferred to the analyses that rely either on linear proximity between the candidate NP and the verb or on feature percolation mechanism. In addition, it is also demonstrated that the multiple activation analysis is supported by the L2 acquisition experiments in terms of reading time difference.
