This paper deals with two types of so-called appositional constructionsin Korean. One is the [NP1 NP2]-construction where both NPs aredefinite NPs. We call this ‘identificational construction.’ The other is the[NP1 NP2]-construction where NP1 is an indefinite NP and NP2 is adefinite NP. We call this ‘attributive construction.’ After examiningwhether these two constructions share the properties of the loose orclose apposition found by previous studies, we conclude that they donot, and thus are not appositional constructions. We suggest that theidentificational construction is an epithet construction, in that NP2 is anepithet for its antecedent, NP1. As for the attributive construction, weconsider NP1 to be adjoined as a predicate to NP2, the subject.
