The purpose of this study was to analyse research steps, thinking processes, behavioral patterns, and generated knowledges in ethologists' research activities, and to develop the model about them. Raw protocols were collected by retrospective interviews with 3 ethologists. To analyse collected raw protocols, the frameworks of research steps, thinking processes, behavioral patterns and knowledges were developed. After the protocol were analyzed, the ethologists' research process model was developed. The results of this study revealed that ethologists' scientific research activities were classified into four steps such as choosing study area, selecting study topic and generating explanation, planing method, and gathering result and interpreting. In addition, the results of this study showed that collection, comprehension, and discussion behaviors were commonly included in all steps. Furthermore, all knowledges were generated by interaction between thinking processes and behaviors in ethologists' research activities. The results of this study would be used for developing teaching- learning strategies which can promote students' activities of biological inquiry. It could be also helpful for the assessment of students' abilities of scientific inquiry skills.
