This study was conducted for the purpose of developing and applying a standard for analyzing inscriptions used in biology I textbooks (8 kinds of textbooks). For this study, first, we established a standard for classifying the sort and types of inscriptions and accompanying inscriptions. Second, we analyzed the sort, functions, and types of inscriptions in the biology I text books according to this standard. Third, we analyzed the suitability of scientific contents in the functional aspects of the materials. As a result, the standard of 'the sort, functions and types of inscriptions and accompanying inscriptions' founded in this study was divided into three parts, such as 7 standards of 'the sort of inscriptions', 6 standards of 'the functions of inscriptions', and 7 standards of 'the type of accompanying inscriptions'. As a result of the quantitative analysis, the sort consists of photograph (46.51%), drawing (28.77%), cartoon (8.83%), table (7.01%), graph (6.65%), concept map (1.21%), and equation(0.86%). Functions consists of complementary (29.18%), illustrative (25.83%), explanatory (22.66%), decorative (18.35%), worksheet (2.89%), and summary (1.09%). Types consists of explanation (44.69%), process(18.98%), detail (17.79%), inner part (6.68%), array (5.08%), result (3.29%), and emphasis (3.29%). Finally, the qualitative result showed that it was effective to express the inscriptions about scientific concepts by explaining the relations among the concepts with explanatory function, to show the natural phenomena with illustrative materials explaining the cause and effect, and to show the principle and process with explanatory function.
