본 연구는 경제적인 측면에서 주한미군을 연구하였다. 주한미군의 가치를 추정하였고 경제적 효과를 분석하였으며 국민경제에서 차지하는 비중과 역할도 살펴 주한미군에 대한 합리적이고 균형성 있는 논의를 유도하고자 하였다. 주한미군이 우리 국민과 국가경제에 미친 영향은 매우 크다. 현재 약 2만 8,500여명의 주한미군이 우리나라에 주둔해 있고, 그들이 보유한 장비 가치가 17~31조원으로 추정되었다. 이 전력을 대체하기 위해서는 23~36조원이 추가 소요될 것으로 예상하였다. 전시에 자동 개입되는 대북억제력의 상징인 미 증원전력의 가치는 120조원 이상으로 추정되었다. 평시에도 주한미군은 운영비 지출을 통해 10억 달러 이상의 물품을 구매하고, 1만 2,000여명의 한국인 근로자를 고용하며, 출장비용 지출 등으로 유효수요를 창출하여 한국경제에 기여하고 있다. 한국경제에 미치는 효과로 안보비용 절감 효과, 소비지출과 한국인 고용으로 인한 국민경제 기여 효과, 대북 억제력 제공을 통해 국제사회에서 한국의 국가위험도를 줄여 국가신인도를 제고하는 효과 등이 있다. 본 연구에서는 주한미군 보유 장비의 경제적 가치, 단순병력과 전투력을 감안한 주한미군 대체비용과 아울러 전시증원전력에 대한 가치도 추정하였다. 주한미군이 한국 경제성장과 안보환경 개선에 미친 긍정적인 효과에 대해서 객관적으로 분석 · 평가하고, 남북관계의 변화와 동북아시아의 안보환경을 고려하여 한국의 국익에 도움이 되는 한 · 미동맹 관계로 발전시켜야 할 것이다.
