Both Lawrence and Junichi Watanabe reveal the protagonists’ struggle between emotion and reason and embody their concern to the spiritual life of human being, express their views towards marriage. They think there are no permanent things in the world and the extramarital affairs of the protagonists are in fact the rebellion to the boring routines.
