이 연구의 목적은 국어 쓰기 능력의 발달특성을 추출하는 데에 있다. 더 자세히 말하면, 응집성 있는 쓰기를 수행하는 데 필요한 교육 내용을 위계화하는 것이다. 이를 위해 중등 첫 학년 7학년 학생들을 대상으로, 설득적 텍스트를 작성하고 돌려 읽으며 상호 첨삭을 하였다. 자료 선정의 기준에 대하여 덧붙이자면, 실행 연구의 성격상 자신의 생각을 개성적으로 표현하기에 설득적 텍스트가 표본으로 적절한 문종이라고 연구자가 나름대로 판단하였다. 연구 결과, 내용면에서는 논지 전개상에 나타난 배경지식의 수준을, 형식면에서는 문장유형의 반복횟수, 결속표지의 적절성, 수사적 표현의 활용, 내용 전개방식의 통일성을 추출하였다. 이러한 발달특성을 연령별로 관찰해 보면 표현상의 응집성 위계를 가늠할 수 있고, 이렇게 하여 수립된 틀은 국어 쓰기능력을 체계적으로 향상시키는 데 도움을 줄 것이다.
