국어의 변별적 자질은 국어 음운론의 기술에 유용하게 쓰일 때에 비로소 그 타당성을 인정받는다. 서술함에 있어서 경제적이면서도 현상의 본질을 명료하게 드러낼 수 있는 변별적 자질은 어떠한 것인가 하는 것이 본고의 주된 내용이다. 본고는 주로 [vocalic]과 [syllabic], [coronal]과 [grave], 자음에서의 [high], [sonorant]와 [nasal], 이른바 후두 자질 그리고 끝으로 [strident]가 국어의 음소 대립 및 음운 현상의 기술에 어떠한 기능을 하는지 고찰하였다.
Distinctive features of Korean can acquire 'descriptive adequacy' if and only if they can be applied to the efficient description of Korean phonology. We have investigated such distinctive features as [vocalic]/[syllabic], [coronal]/[grave], [high] of consonants, [sonorant]/[nasal], so called pharyngeal features and [strident], to consider how they are put into practice in the description of phonemic oppositions and phonological phenomena.
