It was a study on improvement of the problems of selecting ‘wing vocabularies’ and defining them in middle school korean language textbooks from the perspective of lexicography It is found that the four textbooks of middle school 1st grade korean textbooks have different ways to select ‘wing vocabularies’ and define them, even though they use the same novel. There are two problems on selecting wing vocabulary. The first, the four textbooks select different vocabularies without duplication and the second, they have wide deviations in the number of vocabularies on the wing. The problems are in part associated with the textbook writing direction, but it is finally said that the selection of the wing vocabulary are done subjectively. Therefore, the learners’ development and the study results of the basic and educational vocabularies have to be reflected in the selection of the wing vocabulary. There are four problems on defining wing vocabulary. The first, the most vocabulary definitions are based on the standard korean language dictionary of the national institute of the korean language and it means the definitions are not appropriate for the learners’ levels. The second, the original language information are partly used, but it needs to be revised to help the learners’ teaching and learning. The third, the phonetic information, example, and information of related words are hardly used in the four textbooks, and it needs to increase the information for the vocabulary learning and the exact understanding. Finally, wing vocabulary and grammar are not connected. It has to raise the teaching and learning effects with the wing vocabulary information appropriating for achievement standards because of the teaching and learning using wing vocabulary are useful and effective
