정보산업화가 고도화되어 감에 따라 사용자 인터페이스의 지능화, 인간화에 대한 요구가 계속 증가하고 있다. 최근에는 문자인식, 음성인식 이외에 얼굴 표정, 몸동작, 시선을 통해 인터페이스를 이루려고 하는 연구가 진행 중이며 인간의 생체 신호를 이용하려는 연구가 활발하다. 그 중 인간의 두피에서 기록되는 자발적인 전기 활동인 뇌파를 컴퓨터에 연결하여 인간의 의도를 신체적 동작을 거치지 않고 직접 시스템에 전달 할 수 있다. 이런 정보처리 역할을 하는 뇌가 있기 때문에 인간은 다양한 생활을 해 간다. 뇌는 살아 있는 동안 지속적인 전기활동을 하며, 다양한 화학물질을 생산하며, 그 결과로 외부세계의 물리적 에너지는 감각정보를 받아들여져 계산되고, 우리의 근육은 조화롭게 수축하여 행동을 일으키며, 정신현상이 발생한다. 이런 정신현상과 관련하여 전기활동, 물리적 에너지를 통해 뇌에서 발생하는 전류 활동을 뇌파라고 하며, 뇌파를 이용하여 뇌의 인지처리과정을 살필 수 있으며, 수사 기법으로서 활용이 가능한 분야이다. 이런 뇌파의 발생과 관련하여 이 연구에서는 목격자의 특정한 장면에 대한 P300에 차이가 있을 것이라는 명제 하에 연구를 진행하였다. 연구 결과 실험대상자와 통제대상자에게 P300 출현에 차이가 있었다. 이 연구 결과 틀을 중심으로 향 후 범죄수사 등 범죄와 관련된 여러 분야에서 응용될 수 있으며, 실제 재판과정 등에서 관련 증거로서의 성격을 지닐 것이다.
