본 연구는 우리나라에서 현재까지 수행된 고등교육행정 분야의 모든 연구성과를 종합적으로 분석해 봄으로써 전반적 연구동향 파악과 향후 발전과제를 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 2001년~2010년까지 10년 동안 교육학 분야의 31개 학술지에 게재된 고등교육행정 관련 논문을 망라적으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과 고등교육행정 연구는 양적인 측면에서 지속적 증가 추세를 보였으나, 연구주제가 일부 주제영역을 중심으로 치중되어 있고 또한 고등교육 현상을 그 자체로서 이론적으로 탐구한 연구는 매우 드문 것으로 나타났다. 연구방법으로는 문헌연구와 양적연구가 주류를 이루어 왔지만 연구방법 적용의 엄격성 측면에서 비판적 성찰의 여지가 있는 것으로 파악되었다. 연구자의 경우 전반적으로 연구자 숫자가 제한적인 가운데 세부영역별 전문가풀이 아직 제대로 형성되어 있지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 향후 고등교육행정 연구의 질적 수준을 높이고, 연구의 저변을 확대하기 위해서 필요한 과제가 무엇인지를 연구주제, 연구방법, 연구자의 세 가지 측면으로 나누어 제시하였다.
This article reviews the production of research in higher education administration in Korea from a whole perspective. It is a comprehensive approach to analyze articles on higher education published in 33 journals in all subdivisions of the field of education during the last ten years from 2001 to 2010. The results show that although there has been a continuous growth in the number of articles over the last decade, research topics have been placed too much emphasis on some specific areas. Few studies exist which have explored theoretically on the phenomenon of higher education in itself. While document analysis and quantitative analysis are prevailing research methods for studying higher education administration, it shows that researchers need to reflect critically on their approach if it meets the rigorous standard of quality. There is also a limited number of researchers in the field and it is not fully formed a pool of professionals by subdivision to engage in research. Based on the result, we discuss critically trends and challenges of research on higher education administration, and provide some suggestions for expanding the knowledge base of higher education administration in the area of research topic, method, and researcher.
