응용윤리에 대한 최근의 논의에서 두드러진 변화중의 하나는 덕윤리적 접근이 응용윤리의 전 영역에서 광범위하게 적용되고 있다는 점이다. 본 연구에서는 응용윤리의 세부영역들 각각에서 덕윤리가 어떻게 적용되는지를 제시하는 현재까지의 논의들을 넘어서서 응용윤리에 대한 덕윤리적 접근 자체에 대한 비판적 고찰을 시도한다. 먼저 덕윤리적 접근이 응용윤리의 목표와 성격, 그리고 방법론차원에서 어떤 장점과 문제점을 가지는지 살펴본다. 목표차원에서 보면 유덕한 사람을 기준으로 행위지침을 제시하는 덕윤리적 접근은 개인적, 사회적 차원의 의사결정을 위한 토대를 제공하는데 어려움이 있다. 특히 법적, 사회적 정책이나 제도의 수립을 위한 근거를 제공하는데 상대적으로 더 취약하다. 성격차원에서 보면 덕윤리적 접근은 의무론적 관점과 결과주의적 관점의 결합을 허용하며, 도덕적 이상을 삶 전반에 걸쳐 점진적으로 추구하도록 이끌며, 다원주의적 현실을 반영할 수 있도록 하는 장점들이 기대된다. 그러나 상대주의에 대한 우려나 덕들의 갈등문제 등으로 인해 대규모의 이질적인 비면대면 사회에서 일반적인 행위지침을 주는데 적합하지 못하다. 방법론 면에서 상향적 모델에 속하는 덕윤리적 접근은 일상화할 수 있는 어떤 체계적인 추론과정을 제시하지 못하며 아직 덕성을 함양하지 못한 사람들이 따르기 어려운 추론방식이다. 이러한 고찰을 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 의무윤리 내지 규칙윤리적 접근을 기본구조로 삼고 덕윤리적 접근을 보완적으로 취하는 응용윤리체계가 현대사회구조에서 효과적이라고 제안한다. 덕윤리적 접근은 도덕성을 확장하고 이를 실현하는 적절한 방식을 보여주며 사적 영역을 도덕적인 삶에 적절하게 반영하도록 해주고 너무 복잡한 상황이나 다양한 가치들이 첨예하게 대립하는 상황에서 다원적인 해결을 허용하는 등의 보완적 역할을 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to critically investigate the virtue ethics approach itself to applied ethics, which has been widely used in contemporary applied ethics. For this it is examined what would be the merits and demerits of that approach in the aim, characteristics and method of applied ethics. The virtue ethics approach presents action-guidance through virtuous persons but this action-guidance does not work well as the foundation for both the individual and the social decision-making, in particular the latter. In regard to the characteristics of applied ethics the virtue ethics approach is expected to have some merits such as the coordination of the deontologist and the consequentialist perspective, the gradual pursuit of moral ideal, and the reflection of pluralistic realities. It, however, is not appropriate for giving general action-guidance to us in a large-scale, heterogeneous, non face-to-face society because it brings about the worries of relativism and the conflicts of virtues. The virtue ethics approach, as a bottom-up model, does not present a routinizable reasoning procedure and it is not easy for ordinary nonvirtuous people to follow its reasoning way. Based on these investigations this study suggests a system of applied ethics in which deontological ethics or rule ethics serves as a basic structure and virtue ethics has complementary roles.
