AB - This treatise covers analysis on the minds of readers as well as the textual meaning of Korean popular novels from 1910 to 1920, which narratives are usually based on romance through view of the theory of culture. It has been discovered that the subjects used for analysis in the treatise were actually planned for educational purposes, and the characters are described as individuals with modern standards regarding romance. Especially in Mujeong(무정), romance is derived from social role and thus condensed into the desires of social community. As a result, the textual meaning of romance in the novel comes to a conclusion of realizing social duty for leading a nation/modern state. On the other hand, in Banhang(반항), the meaning of romance is derived from a personal desire to get free from obligations of family, thus concluding in personal pursuit of happiness. Thus Mujeong seeks social duties and the enlightenment of modern spirit, whereas Banhang is in pursuit of personal desire and modern sense. However, both show a romantic tendency in which they idealize, if not transcend reality. Also, the obstacles of love are established as individuals who lack modern education, or individuals trying to keep to their old customs. Through such meaning and tendency of text, and also through such novelistic devices, we can easily perceive that modernization and the founding of an independent nation were the main components forming the readers' mind of the time.
