이 논문에서는 다매체 시대의 총아인 TV 프로그램에 나타난 매체언어, 그 중에서도 최근 예능 프로그램에서 자주 사용되고 있는 자막언어에 대해 분석하고자 한다. 예능 프로그램의 자막언어는 정보전달적 효과와 함께 서사적 기능도 갖 추고 있다. 리얼 버라이어티 예능 프로그램에서 TV 자막 언어는 서술자적 성격을 갖고 있다. 또한 TV 리얼 프로그램도 서사적 성격을 띠고 있다. TV 자막언어의 서사적 기능은 다음과 같다. 첫째 장면내 주체의 발화는 인물의 대사를 나타낸다. 둘째 장면내 주체 가 부딪친 상황은 인물의 심리 묘사를 나타난다. 셋째, 장면 외 주체의 해설로 서 사건의 진행을 나타낸다. 넷째, 장면 외 주체의 개입으로서 편집자적 논평 을 나타낸다. 이렇듯 자막언어는 정보 전달 기능만이 아니라 서사구조의 서술자 역할 을 한다. 장면 내외 주체와 시청자의 의사소통행위를 적극적으로 이끌어간다. 시청자는 이러한 자막언어를 다시 매체를 통해 장면 내외 주체에게 피드백하 고 패러디함으로 발화를 하게 되며 그 서사구조가 재창작되기도 한다. 최근 미디어의 접근성이 높아지고 수용자의 피드백 또한 급격하게 늘어 나고 있다. 이런 면에서 TV 자막언어는 비판의 대상으로만 간주할 것이 아니 라 서사적 특징을 지니는 대상으로서 가르치는 것이 바람직하다.
