The documentary culture of Joseon Period is based on the Korean papers which were made of paper mulberry(楮) in material and by Dochim(搗砧) in processing. Dochim eliminates the space between fibers by beating paper and makes paper surface flat and sleeky, helping paper be durable, glossy and conservatory. As the Korean paper is made of paper mulberry, or long bark fiber, it has won excellent reputation as a documentary material on which hand writings can be expressed naturally through Dochim processing. As mentioned above, Dochim is a processing after paper making. It is known that Dochim was applied to enhance the quality for documentary material. However, the records of Royal Ceremony Records and Official Diary reveals that Dochim was applied after the transcription or printing of Royal books, contrary to the common Dochim processing applied after paper making. Accordingly, it needs to check the cases in which of Dochim applying times were different and make the reason clear. Based on such critical mind, this study aims to examine the Dochim applied for Royal book covering in the late Joseon period. Silrok(實錄), Seonwongyebogiryak(璿源系譜紀略) and Yeolseongeopil(列聖御筆) are the representative Royal books which show the core of Joseon's documentary culture, in their contents as well as books themselves. Royal books used thin paper(草注紙) and paper mulberry(楮注紙) for transcription and printing. The reason why Dochim was applied to Royal books after transcription or printing is to reduce the thickness of books and make paper durable and flat, Dochim was usually conducted in the place where ad-hoc agency responsible for Royal books was set in but if not available, it was also conducted in paper making office. For Dochim processing, mat(地衣) was laid in the bottom and white odd paper(白休紙) was used as interleaf. Tools used in Dochim processing were wood club(木椎), mallet(方莫赤), paper armor(紙甲), etc. The Royal books to which Dochim was applied during book covering are of high density, so rather heavy. This paper examined the Dochim processing applied to Royal books' covering and explained the production process of Royal books. This study can be utilized for the repair or restoration works of damaged Royal books. It also serves as a opportunity to newly recognize Dochim which was known just as a treatment after paper making.
