For the historians of studying the Goryeo Dynasty, Sajeon(私田) has been a difficult problem in defining it. According to the historiography of Sajeon(私田), it was understood as having the three meanings. It was a privately-owned land, a private right of getting the land tax, and it has both meanings. In this article, I’d like to redefine concepts of Sajeon(私田). In order to do that, I should use a new method of the conceptual history, at first I researched the meanings of Sa(私) in Goryeosa(高麗史) and Goryeosajeolyo(高麗史節要) which were the classic historiography and were written in early Joseon Dynasty. Through the research, I know that Sa(私) had diversity of meanings;‘oneself’, ‘private’, ‘partiality’, ‘self-interest’, ‘in secret’ and ‘own desire without a control’. What take note is that the meanings of Sa(私) become diverse through certain time, for example, the meaning of ‘oneself’ and ‘private’ was used in whole time of Goryeo Dynasty, but the meaning of ‘own desire without control’ was mostly discussed for the late Goryeo Dynasty. This use of Sa(私) affected the concept of Sajeon(私田), in late Goryeo Dynasty, Sajeon(私田) got three meanings. It was the private land or the land which the state gave the officals. This concept of Sajeon(私田) was discussed for whole ear of Goryeo Dynasty. However, in late Goryeo Dynasty, Sajeon(私田) maintained the other meanings, like the Sa(私)’s diversity of meaning, Sajeon(私田) was understood as the land which one willingly leaved his property to a person without particular control out of the state or at will occupied the other’s land. Because Sajeon(私田) was regard as this meaning, some reformers should remove the Sajeon(私田) form Goryeo Dynasty. On the other hand, in early Joseon Dynasty, Sajeon(私田) was the officials’s land in province besides Gyeonggi(京畿), which the land was received from the state. The official like Jo-jun(趙浚) thought that if the received land from the state was located in province, the overlord in the province, using the land, easily occupied the other property. In the reason, Jo-jun(趙浚) define the officials’s land in province as Sajeon(私田), other officials in early Joseon Dynasty accepted the his defining.
