지식과 정보의 수명이 짧아지는 지식정보화사회에서는 생애에 결친 학습 수요의 증가로 인해 고등교육의 변화를 요구하고 있다. 이 연구는 학령기 학생 위주의 교육 시스템을 운영하고 있는 지금의 대하 시스템이 사회 변화와 학령 인구의 감소로 인한 대학의 기능과 역할 제고 방안을 모색한다. 대학은 엘리트 교육에서 대중교육, 보편교육으로 전환하고 있으며, 경제주의적 모델을 추구하는 대학이 계속 늘어나고 있다. 또한 대학은 교통과 ICT의 발달로 국제적인 대학 경쟁체제로 전환되었고, 공간적 제약을 받지 않고 학습이 가능한 사이버교육체제로 전환되어 전통 방식의 대학의 위상이 흔들리고 있다. 최근에는 미국 명문대학 모두 무료 온라인 강좌(MOOC)를 개설하였고, 이를 이수한 사람의 이력을 보고 채용하는 경향이 늘고 있다. MOOC의 컨텐츠가 현장에서 활용이 용이하다는 인식으로 대학 학위보다 MOOC 이수증이 사회에서 더 유용한 증서로 인정받고 있다. 대학은 이제 학습 결과에 의해 운영되기 보다는 사회에서 다양한 경험을 인증하여 학습으로 이어지는 체제를 도입할 필요가 있다. 경험학습의 인증은 성인이 대학에 입학하여 학습할 수 있는 기제로 작용한다. 전통적 대학은 청년층의 학생을 수용하여 왔으나 최근에는 성인학습자 중심대학의 중요성이 부상되고 있다. 성인학습대학은 성인들이 직업 현장에 필요한 새로운 지식과 기술을 가르치는 고등교육기관이다. 따라서 기존 대학의 체제를 각 대학이 실정에 따라 재구조하여 성인의 역량을 고양하기 위한 유연한 운영 시스템이 설계될 필요가 있다. 이는 대학의 생존 전략일뿐만 아니라 국가 발전에 필요한 인재 개발을 위해 중요하다.

The changes in higher education are becoming more emphasized as the demand of lifelong learning is increased due to the social shift to knowledge based society. This research seeks the ways to improve the function and role of the current universities which are running its system only for high school graduates. The type of education university provides is shifting from the elite education to general and common education. More universities are accepting the economic model from the traditional models like the Britain’s liberal model, the French positivistic model, the US relativistic or utilitarian models and the German humanistic model. In addition, the status of universities in terms of physical space is threatened by the rise of global competition by the development of transportation and ICT technologies, and switching to the cyber education system which enables learning anywhere in the world. Recently, the US distinguished universities opened the MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) providing free online course education, and companies are now showing the tendency to hire employees who took these courses. The recognition that the contents provide by MOOC are more useful in working fields led to the acknowledgment of MOOC certificate as more valuable qualification factor than traditional university degrees. Consequently, universities need to authenticate diverse experiences in society and introduce the recognition of experiential learning. This system operates as the mechanism letting adults to enter universities and learn. The traditional role of universities has been focused on education, research and service, but the importance of adult university is more highlighted. Adult university is the higher education institute teaching new knowledge and technology necessary for workplace. Thus, more flexible management system determination the current situation each university faces should be designed to enhance working capability of adults. This is not only vital for the university’s right to survive, but also for achieving the task in order to develop human resources helpful to a nation
