Platero y yo is thought of as a children’s book and yet it’s one of the best work of Nobel Prize-winning writer Juan Ramón Jiménez. It shows not only that the work has an extraordinary literary quality but that it has been highly acclaimed for its popularity. The poem evokes the meaning of simple life in nature in plain words. At the same time, however, it conveys the antagonism towards the society where the poet failed to adapt, sense the loneliness of the uprooted, melancholy and agony. This attitude came from the hostility to the modern life which was fascinated by the myth of progress. It also can be interpreted as frustration of life. Jiménez tried to restore the value of living in communion with nature in contrast to degenerate life in the city. To him, the city is a place full of temptation and immorality. The writer expresses his skepticism about the dark side of the city life which represents the excessive desire. In addition, the importance of daily lives, spiritual comfort, and communication is emphasized in the poem. That’s why the contact with nature and serenity in Platero y yo should be considered as an alternative not denial or escape.
