돈키호테는 출간된 지 4세기라는 긴 시간을 뛰어 넘어 오늘날 까지 세계 최고의 소설로 평가되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 돈키호테 작품에 나타나는 남녀 사랑에서 가장 흥미로운 여성의 자유의지와 여성주의의 모습을 찾아보고자 한다. 동시에 페미니즘의 흔적을 통해 작가 세르반테스의 근대적 사상을 확인해보고자 한다. 서구 여러 비평가들은 세르반테스는 여성을 존중할 줄 아는 진정한 작가라고 평가했다. 돈키호테에서는 당시 남성의 소유물로 생각했던 여성이 이성적인 목소리로 자신의 권리를 되찾는 여성주의가 작품 전반에 나타나고 있다. 예를 들자면 돈키호테 1편에서 마르셀라(Marcela)는 남성의 일방적인 사랑을 의무적으로 여성이 받아들이던 당시 사회를 거부하고 있다. 농부의 딸 도로테아(Dorotea)는 자신에게 사랑을 맹세하고 순결을 빼앗은 공작의 아들 페르난도(Fernando)에게 이성적으로 자신이 진정한 아내임을 호소하여 결혼으로 해피 앤딩한다. 이처럼 여성은 자신의 운명을 수동적이고 숙명적으로 받아들이지 않고, 이성적으로 자신의 존재를 표명하며 자신의 사랑을 능동적으로 쟁취한다. 세르반테스는 돈키호테 소설에서 여성은 더 이상 남성의 소유물이 아니며, 남녀가 평등한 근대정신을 보여주고 있다. 돈키호테 소설은 세르반테스의 근대 정신과 더불어 서구 문학에 처음으로 페미니즘 사상을 보여준 작품이라고 볼 수 있다.
Today and even going beyond the four centuries, ‘Don Quijote de la Mancha’ is still highly estimated as a best novel in the world. This thesis investigates feminism and women’s free will as a most interesting subject in love of men and women, reflected in a work of Don Quijote de la Mancha. At the same time this thesis also identify the modern thoughts of Cervantes(author) through which embedded into his novel with traces of feminism. The western critics evaluated Cervantes as a real feminist novelist who respected women. They also put forward many feminist findings in a novel as evidences which represented and reflected women’s rights with rational voices against traditional presuming (women as men’s possession) in ‘Don Quijote de la Mancha’. For example, Marcela who appeared in chapter 1 strongly rejected a society where women were accepting one-sided love with men mandatorily at that time. Also Dorotea (farmer’s daughter in novel) is a good evidence. She claimed a real wife by herself and appealed reasoningly to Fernando (duke's son) who took her love and pure and finally made a happy-ending with marriage. Like these cases in a novel, while women do not allow passive attitude doomed to accept her fate, they represent themselves reasoningly and achieve their love actively. Cervantes showed that women are not men's properties any more and there exists a modern spirit, such as men and women is equal. Don Quijote de la Mancha’ as a great novel shows the modern spirit of Cervantes and feminism thoughts for the first time in western literature.
