이 글의 목적은 사하르 칼리파의 소설 『유산』을 통해 팔레스타인 디아스포라의 귀환이 지니는 의미를 고찰하는 데에 있다. 『유산』에서는 오슬로 협정 이후에 팔레스타인으로 귀환하는 사람들의 이야기를 다룬다. 『유산』에서 ‘귀환’은 결코 낭만적으로 그려지지 않는다. 작가는 팔레스타인 사람들이 당면한 어려움을 이스라엘 탓으로 돌리기보다는 팔레스타인 내부로 비판의 시선을 고정시킨다. 이때 팔레스타인 사회의 모순이 분명히 드러난다. 팔레스타인 사람들은 민족 정체성 하나로 귀속될 수 없는 다양한 욕망을 지니고 있다. 이들에게는 잃어버린 일상성을 회복하는 일이 필요하다. 여성 억압의 문제 또한 간과될 수 없다. 그리고 그 땅에서 오랫동안 함께 살아온 이스라엘 사람들과 공존하여 살아가야 하는 어려운 과제도 풀어나가야 한다. 소설의 마지막에는 이스라엘 병원에서 제공된 정자로 인공수정된 아기가 태어난다. ‘팔레스타인-이스라엘’ 정체성을 지닌 이 아기를 팔레스타인 사회에서 수용해야 하는 일이야말로 오늘날 팔레스타인 귀환자들에게 남겨진 진정한 ‘유산’이다.
The purpose of this study is to contemplate the meaning of the return of Palestinian Diaspora through Sahar Khalifeh’s novel The Inheritance. According to United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine in 1948, a Jewish nation of Israel emerged on the land that has been occupied by Palestinians. As a result, wars broke out ceaselessly in the Mideast, producing huge number of Palestinian refugees. For Palestinians who lost their land and home in where they have been lived for generations, ‘The right of return’ is very important. In The Inheritance, the author tells the story of the people who return to Palestine after the Oslo Accord. In The Inheritance, ‘return’ is never a romantic thing. In the reality of Palestinian society that the returnees confront, the authorities are incompetent and corruptions are serious. Unemployment and poverty are also severe. Rather than blaming Israel for the difficulties that Palestinians are confronted with, the author fixes her crucial viewpoint within Palestine. Here the contradiction of Palestinian society emerges clearly. Palestinians have diverse desires that cannot come under the name of ethnic identity alone. They need to recover the lost ordinariness of daily life. The issue of suppression of women also should not be overlooked. Moreover, they have to solve difficult task of living together with Israelis on that very land. At the end of the novel, a baby is born through artificial insemination from a sperm provided from Israeli hospital. Accepting this baby with ‘Palestinian- Israeli’ identity in Palestinian society is the true ‘inheritance’ left to the Palestinian returnees today. The author emphasizes that return for responsibility not for right is required now, by describing multi- layered problems that Palestinians are faced with in her novel.
