문기독교인으로서 문화비평과 문화철학 혹은 문화학 분야에 관심을 두고 연구하고자 할 때 거기에는 한 가지 사실이 전제되어 있다. 그것은 바로 ‘기독교 세계관’이다. 문화와 기독교의 관계를 다룰 때에도 예외는 아니다. 이제 문제는 문화와 기독교의 관계를 어떻게 설정하느냐에 달려있다. 그 관계설정의 방향에 따라 문화비평의 방식도 달라진다. 오늘 우리가 기독교적 관점에서 문화비평을 수행한다고 할 때 가장 바람직한 관계설정은 어떤 것이어야 할까? 기독교적 문화비평에서 참조할 수 있는 모델은 어떤 것인가? 이러한 물음은 기독교 문화비평의 토대(土臺)에 대한 문제제기이다. 다문화 시대를 살아가는 기독교인들에게 이 문제는 반드시 짚고 넘어가야 할 핵심 과제중의 하나이다. 우리가 기독교와 문화의 관계설정을 염두에 둘 때, 이 문제를 가장 분명하게 제시한 인물로 리차드 니버(Helmut Richard Niebuhr)를 꼽는데 이견을 보이는 사람은 드물다. 그만큼 니버의 견해는 기독교 문화권 세계에 큰 영향을 미쳤으며, 한국의 기독교계와 개혁주의 신학 진영에도 많은 영향을 주었다. 그가 구분하고 있는 다섯 가지 유형의 기독교 문화관은 이미 ‘기독교적 문화읽기’를 위한 고전(古典)으로 정평이 나 있다.지금 우리가 다시 니버를 만나 그의 『그리스도와 문화』를 꼼꼼하게 읽어보려는 이유는 기독교 문화비평과 기독교 문화학의 논의, 특히 문화관 비평에 있어서 절대 빠질 수 없는 사유의 틀을 우리들에게 제공해 주고 있기 때문이다. 기독교 문화관에 대한 니버의 풍성한 논의들을 확인해 봄으로써 우리는 이 시대에 맞는 선교 전략의 하나로서 ‘문화선교(文化宣敎)’를 위한 전략적 도움도 얻어낼 수 있을 것이다. 그러니까 니버의 논의는 문화선교에 있어서 문화변혁의 원리와 지향점을 분명히 확인하는 계기가 될 수 있을 것이다. 이 점을 확인하고 분명하게 드러내는 것이 이 글의 궁극적인 목적이다.

He deals with five types christian culture-view in his Christ and Culture. We called it, so to speak, (1)Type of Opposition, (2)Type of Agreement, (3)Type of Synthesis, (4)Type of Paradox, and (5)Type of Transformation. These types are considered as a classic for Reading Christian Culture. Through the discussion about Christian Culture of Niebuhr's, we will find a new strategy for the Mission of Culture. Niebuhr will suggest a principle and goal of transformation of Culture to us.
