India is known for its rich culture, literature and oral arts. Proverbs are the most widely and commonly used in the culture and long standing tradition of oral arts. Among such oral arts, Indian proverbs have been facilitating the transmission of knowledge and conventions from generation to generation. In this paper I propose to present some linguistic information from Indian proverbs such as Hindi, Marathi, Kannada, Bengali, Panjabi, and Asamiya and discuss how this linguistic material reflects the status of women in the Indian society.
