‘예술이 사회 변화를 추동할 힘을 지녔는가?’라는 질문에 대한 답은 각자의 견해에 따라 다를 수 있다. 그러나 그 답에 상관없이 ‘예술이 사회 변화를 가장 민감하게 수용할 수 있다’는 생각에는 이견이 없을 것이다. 오늘날 모든 예술 중에서 가장 높은 대중적 인지도를 바탕으로 성장한 영화는 여타 예술 장르에서 대부분의 미적 장치들을 수혈 받은 종합매체의 성격을 띠고 있다. 따라서 영화는 타 예술 장르의 진화에 민감하게 반응할 수밖에 없으며, 거대자본이 필요한 특수성으로 인해 대중의 인식의 틀과 취향을 고려하지 않을 수 없게 되었다. 폴란드 영화 역시 정치사회적 변화에 따라서 그 색깔이 달라졌으며, 대중의 기호에 편승하여 겉모습을 달리했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 폴란드 영화를 규정하는 몇 가지 개념은 존재한다. 타 예술에 비해 월등히 발전한 문학의 자양분을 받아들여 각색 영화가 득세한 점, 이데올로기의 20세기를 거치면서 형성된 사회주의 리얼리즘의 흔적 그리고 예술의 사회적 기능을 요구하는 분위기로 인해 파생된 사회고발 다큐멘터리의 전통으로 폴란드 영화를 정의할 수 있을 것이다. 오늘날에도 유용한 폴란드 영화에 대한 위와 같은 개념 규정의 시발점은 스탈린이 사망하고 고무우카가 집권한 1956년 이후의 영화 경향에 기인한 것이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 필름 폴스키(Film Polski)의 성립으로 인해, 폴란드 영화계는 미학적 교두보를 확보할 수 있었으며, 유닛(unit)이라고 통칭되는 영화 프로덕션의 활성화로 인해 산업적 토대를 완성하였다. 이 시기의 또 다른 특징은 작가주의의 개막이라고 할 수 있다. 주지하다시피, 작가주의(auteurism)는 1950년대에 유럽에서 태동한 것으로써, 영화의 예술 가능성을 열어주는 창문 역할을 했으며, 시나리오 작가나 아트 디렉터에게 주어졌던 영화의 헤게모니를 감독에게 되돌려주었다. 작가주의가 태동하면서 비로소 영화는 온전한 예술로서 대접을 받게 된 것이다. 그러나 폴란드에서는 서구의 작가주의와는 별개로 그들만의 작가주의 경향이 대두되었다. 문학과의 완전한 결별을 선언하고, 펜으로 글을 쓰듯 카메라로 영화를 완성하는 의미의 작가주의는 아니지만, 영화 제작과정 중에 감독 자신의 색깔을 강조하면서, 기존 문학작품을 자기 스타일대로 각색하는 폴란드식 작가주의는 개성 있는 감독과 영화들을 배출한 원동력이 되었다. 아울러 이시기를 논할 때 가장 중요한 테마 중에 하나로 간주되는 블랙시리즈(Czarny Seria)도 다분히 작가주의의 영향 아래에서 출발한 것이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
