헝가리의 민족과 민족 문화 정체성 형성에는 합스부르크와의 역사적 상호관련성이 매우 중요한 역할을 한 사실을 본 조사연구를 통해 밝혀보았다. 이와 함께 헝가리 인들의 민족 정체성 형성과정에서는 “natio Hungarica”와 “magyar nemzet”의 두 용어로 요약할 수 있는 국가와 민족의 중심과 주체에 대한 해석과 이해를 역사전개 과정을 통해서 고찰하여 보았다. 이 정체성 형성의 전개과정에는 역사의 시대적 흐름뿐 아니라 라틴어, 헝가리어, 독일어와 관련된 언어적 측면, 종교개혁과 반종교개혁 즉 가톨릭과 칼뱅교의 종교적 측면, 귀족과 농민-농노계층 그리고 시민층으로 대별되는 봉건신분질서에 따른 사회적 측면이 필연적으로 밀접하게 연관되어 있었으며, 또한 합스부르크에 의한 언어적, 종교적, 사회적 측면 전반에 대한 작용과 헝가리 측의 반작용이라는 상관관계가 근원적 변수 역할을 행하였음을 찾아볼 수 있었다. 헝가리 인들의 민족 정체성 근간 형성과 함께 민족 문화도 틀을 잡게 되며, 민족 문화의 큰 틀에서 나타나고 있는 민족적, 역사적 성격은 민족 정체성 형성과정의 흐름과 함께하는 사실 역시 알 수 있다. 헝가리가 고대 이래 내포해오고 있던 다민족 사회의 특성 역시 합스부르크에 의한 헝가리 견제와 제어에 활용되어 왔으며, 이 점 역시 민족 정체성 형성에 영향을 끼쳤던 것은 분명하다. 19세기를 통하여 전개된 비헝가리계 제민족의 민족의식 각성과 독립성과 자주성을 확보하기 위한 노력은 헝가리 인들 자신의 정체성 형성에만 국한되지 않고 이후 헝가리 인들 스스로의 자기이해에 커다란 파급효과를 불러일으키게 된다는 것 역시 인식할 수 있으므로, 본 “합스부르크 제국과 헝가리 민족 문화 정체성” 연구 내용을 바탕으로 하여 “합스부르크 제국과 헝가리의 역사, 문화적 자기이해”에 대한 조사연구도 계속되어야 할 필요성이 분명해졌다.

In this paper, I try to explain the fact that the mutual relations with Habsburg empire had been an important role to establish Hungary's national and cultural identity. I consider “natio Hungarica” and “magyar nemzet” in the process of establishing national identity which were two essential concepts to understand Hungarians' state's and national importance and core. Some elements such as language, religion, social aspects had been interconnected in the process of establishing national identity and the fundamental variable was an action and counteraction about language, religion, social aspects between Habsburg and Hungary. With establishing national identity and national culture, Hungarians' national and historical character had been appeared in those process accordingly. The fact that the character with which Hungarians has had from the ancient times has been used to check and control them by Habsburg monarchy is obvious. Since the struggles for national identity and independence of non-magyar minorities had effected on the establishing Hungarians' identity and ‘self-understanding’ through 19th century, it is necessary to research on the subject “Habsburg empire and Hungarians” historical and cultural self-understanding.
