As many scholars have already pointed out, text linguistics has its roots in ancient rhetoric. Speech production processes explained in ancient rhetoric, for instance, are very similar to those of text production depicted in modern text linguistics. The present study aims at identifying and discussing similarities between rhetoric in Korea, instead of ancient rhetoric, and text linguistics. To that end, efforts will be made to compare, as the starting point, what constitutes rhetoric and text linguistics respectively. Then detailed comparisons between ‘inventio’ and text production, ‘dispositio’ and theme structure, ‘elocutio’ and textuality, and appeals and argumentative text structures will ensue. As part of the conclusion, it is suggested that making comparisons between ‘logos,’ a crucial vehicle for persuasion in ancient rhetoric, and argumentation structures in text linguistics, between the stasis theory and superstructure of argumentative texts, and between persuation and textfuction will prove to be good research topics.
