"Modesty" is one of the most importantprinciples of communication in Russian because the concepts of "dedication" and"self-restraint" are considered as positive values in Russian culture. This article isdevoted to an analysis of the implementation of the principle of modesty through notonly the transpositive usages of personal pronouns and personal forms of verbs referringto a speaker, but also the morpho-syntactic constructions with atypical forms ofsubject-speaker, such as non-agentive passives, impersonal and definite-personalconstructions with omitted subject in the first personal pronouns. All these constructionsin which a speaker is implicitly referred to reduce his discursive salience and distractstatements from the deictic center. As a consequence, the illocutionary force ofstatements is weakened and the principle of modesty is realized.
