In this review, China’s perception on the international situation and its diplomatic strategy changes were examined for China with its drastically improved international status since the 2008 global financial crisis. China’s diplomatic behavior during 2009-2010 especially became very assertive unlike that in the past, and China’s according internal assessment and controversy were summarized. China’s assertive diplomacy became amplified as China’s overconfidence on status elevation was combined with the rising of nationalism during the process of responding to the financial crisis. However, the Chinese leadership and the mainstream learned circles are taking a prudent approach of regarding the attempt to challenge the US or change the existing order as being inappropriate to the current national power of China. During this process, the concept of ‘core interest’ is frequently emphasized as an important concept for understanding China’s future diplomatic strategy. In regards to its core interest, the Chinese government presents the three core interests of territory sovereignty, the Chinese Communist Party centered political system and sustainable economic development. China’s foreign policy in the future is expected to be expressed through different methods of response strategy upon dividing into core interest and non-core interest.
