In Linshu (six word‐building methods), Huiyi builds a new character by combining two or more letters and this is the combination of shapes and the combination of meanings. First, this study examined the classification of Huiyizi. Depending on the criteria of classification, Huiyizi may be classified according to the way of combination or according to the way of combining meanings. Among 900 basic Chinese characters for Chinese classics education in middle school, 201 (22%) are Huiyizi. Of them, 31 are of parallel (竝列) type, 8 of part (部分) type, 120 of association (聯想) type, and 42 of picture (繪畫) type. Major Huiyizi teaching methods commonly used at present are explanation, diagram (圖示), demonstration (示範), and real object‐based (實物) method. Demonstration and the real object‐based method have a limitation in actual use, and explanation and diagram using ancient characters are highly effective and usable in education. If methods adequate for Huiyizi education are applied, they will be greatly helpful for Chinese character education as a whole.
