孝道是中国及亚洲独特的文化根源和道德准则。孔子将孝定义为对父母的尊重与爱戴,不仅是儒教,佛教中也同样提倡感谢、报答父母的恩惠,强调孝道的施行。传统的孝是个人及社会和谐有序发展的根源,是一切行为的基本准则。但孝道等中国传统儒家思想,在进入二十世纪后,不仅在政治、社会等方面受到批判,同时随着市场经济的飞速发展,更是逐步丧失了其基本精神。儒教在近代化、产业化的过程中逐渐成为批判的对象。由于与过去相比,老人的社会地位不断降低,创建尊重老人的社会文化也显得日趋重要。一段时间,中国社会随着传统文化的退化,孝这一传统文化的命脉也出现了断层,但正如上文所示,即使时代发生了变化,孝文化的精神仍然存在。虽然中国人的生活重心由农村转向了城市,家庭形态也由大家族转向了小家庭,但中国人根深蒂固的孝文化思想仍发挥着巨大的作用。文化大革命后,孝的思想观念有所淡化,但随着现代社会的发展,施行孝的方式逐渐多样化。虽然随着社会发展,传统的孝观念有所淡化,但与提倡强调传统孝文化相比,创造重新认识孝的价值与意义的契机则更为重要。
