덴마크에 도착한 베오울프는 괴물 그렌델과 싸우기 전에 일련의 도전에 직면하게 된다. 하지만 그가 극복한 도전들은 무용의 과시가 아닌지적, 심리적 역량을 내포하고 있는 화술(話術)로 구성되어 있기 때문에 이에 대한 고찰은 베오울프의 자질 및 성격을 규명하는데 중요한척도가 되고 있다. 덴마크의 해안경비대장을 겨냥한 베오울프의 첫 번째 화술은 영웅주의 사회의 격식에 따라 진행되며 나름대로의 신중함과 겸손함을 깔고 있다. 하지만 이렇듯 치밀하게 짜여진 베오울프의 화술은 대화가 진행되는 과정에서 다른 양상을 보인다. 베오울프는 흐로드가르 왕이 자신의 조언을 받아들이지 않으면 말할 수 없는 고통을당하게 될 것이라는 가상의 상황을 설정한다(Beo: 280-285). 베오울프는 자신의 무용을 과신한 나머지 이러한 가상의 상황을 설정하는데 있어 아마도 자신이 의도하지 않았던 실패한 영웅의 이미지를 투영함으로써 야기될 수 있는 영웅적 자존심을 건드리는 실책을 범하고 있는것이다. 즉, 영웅주의 사회에서 가장 민감한 부분으로 간주되는 코미타투스의 정체성--명예를 기반으로 하는--에 의문을 제기함으로써 자신의 경솔함을 드러내고 있는 것이다. 하지만 베오울프의 화술에서 보여 지는 이러한 부족한 면들은 그가긍정적인 방향으로 성장할 여지가 있음을 암시하고 있으며, 동시에 베오울프가 서사시에 등장하는 전형적인 영웅의 면모를 탈피하여 소설속에 보이는 성격(character)의 특성을 지니고 있음을 입증하는 것이다.
This paper shows how Beowulf overcomes obstacles by means of his verbal skills. Beowulf is keenly aware of the social standing of the other figures in this poem and he employs different modes of speech accordingly in order to avoid offending their pride. However,the formality and dignity of Beowulf's speeches sometimes conceals his lack of self-restraint which can be detected only in the sub-text. Such an air of formality and politeness suddenly diminishes as Beowulf, when he speaks to the coastguard, turns his attention to the possibly disastrous future of Hrothgar. It seems unclear whether or not Beowulf intends to judge the condition of Danish military capability, but the underlying meaning appears to point to their lack of this quality. Beowulf's lack of self-restraint, a negative feature in this figure makes him into a character with greater depth than may be expected in an idealized heroic archetype.
