과학소설과 환상문학은 일상적인 현실세계에서 불가능한 현상을 서사의 핵심적인 화두로 삼고 있다는 점에서 공통점을 지닌다. 또한 두 장르 모두 핍진성에 의거하여 사실주의적인 묘사를 토대로 삼고 있는데, 이는 팬터지나 마술적 사실주의 등 인접 장르들과 구분되는 특징이기도 하다. 이러한 유사성 때문에 많은 이론가들이 두 장르의 분기점을 찾기 위해 고심해 왔다. 하지만 “고도로 발달한 과학기술은 사실상 마법이나 마찬가지이다.”라는 아서 클라크의 말이 상징적으로 함축하듯 두 문학의 경계를 가르는 것은 여전히 모호하고 쉽지 않은 작업으로 보인다. 본고에서는 과학소설과 환상문학의 차이를 구체적인 작품을 중심으로 상세하게 비교, 분석해 보았다. 하지만 두 장르의 차이를 전반적으로 논한다는 것은 매우 방대한 작업이기 때문에 다음과 같이 몇 가지 연구범주의 제한을 두었다. 첫째, 본 연구는 근대문학장르로서 과학소설과 환상문학의 공시적, 구조적인 차이점에 초점을 맞추고자 했다. 따라서 두 장르의 문학사적인 전통과 기원에 대한 언급은 가급적 배제되었다. 둘째, 두 장르의 구조적인 차이는 주로 시공간과 같은 대표적인 서사구성요소와 세계관을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 각 장르의 궁극적인 특색은 결국 지향하는 세계관에 닿아있기 마련이며, 개별적인 서사구성요소 또한 세계관에 따라 특정한 유형화가 가능하기 때문이다. 셋째, 두 장르의 요소가 동시에 담긴 작품을 대상으로 각 장르별 특성을 추출, 변별해 보고자 시도했다. 이러한 의도에서 20세기 대표적인 환상문학 작가이자, 특히 보르헤스로부터 ‘이성화된 상상’의 장르를 창시했다고 평가받은 아돌포 비오이 까사레스의 작품들을 구체적인 분석의 대상으로 삼았다. 지금까지 국내에서 과학소설과 환상문학에 대한 연구는 상대적으로 소홀히 다루어져 왔다. 특히 과학소설의 경우 ‘대중적 장르’라는 인식 때문에 학계의 관심 밖에 놓인 경우가 적지 않았다. 본 연구가 두 장르에 대한 기존의 인식을 제고할 수 있는 계기가 되기를 바라마지 않는다.
This thesis tried to analyze the difference between science fiction and fantastic literature, focusing on a few literary works in details by using the comparative analysis method. Even though this thesis also accept the limit (such as it is hard to classify the whole difference between them), this thesis tried to overcome this limitation by using comparative method and on the basis of analysis constraint with regulated research category and variables as below:First, this study focuses on the difference with cincronical and structural perspectives between science fiction and fantastic literature. For this reason and if possible, this thesis and the comparative analysis excludes the tradition and origin of both genres. Second, about the structural difference between them, this thesis focuses on narrative elements such as time-space and view of the world suggested in both genres. Third, this thesis tried to extract each characters of science fiction and fantastic literature from targeted literary works which include the elements of both genres. Following this intention, this thesis intensively focuses on the works of Adolfo Bioy Casares, who is one of the most well-known and respected novelist in the contemporary fantastic literature. In this regard, Borges who is a distinguished author in fantastic literature also mentioned him as “progenitor of ‘imaginación razonada’”. Until now, the study of science fiction and fantastic literature is inattentive in academic works. In particular, the case of science fiction is less attentive for the reason of ‘popular genre.’ Probably this thesis will contribute to reconsideration and reshaping of both genres.
