Xukun 徐坤 has been writing novels since 1993, and the novel ‘Baihwa 白話’ brought her into prominence. Xukun’s works are distinguished by novel contents and style which break the mold especially in the case of the novels dealing with intellectuals, and her works have presented a new signpost for Chinese intellectuals. From early on, literary critics classed Xukun with Wangshuo 王朔, and some even labeled her as 'female Wangshuo'. In fact, Xukun is one of the novelists with the most realistic writing style in the twentieth century Chinese literature. New-age writers are generally considered easy reading, but Xukun's novels are not light reading. It is not because her writing is too complicated; it is because her novels exhibit abundant penetrating glances at human lives and conditions. Few of Xukun's works deal with people falling in love. She prefers grappling with characters or incidents pertaining to significant social consequences. Xukun's novels display a style of colloquialism and satire with which she freely probes into the lineaments of contemporary China and the predicaments of human survival. Her novels are characterized by the colorful and kaleidoscopic use of language which achieves an acute sense of reality and engrossment. In sum, Xukun's novels are critical comments on the reality of contemporary Chinese intellectuals and on the social realities as a whole, and also are deep thoughts on human conditions.
