『신 겐지모노가타리』는 근대 이후 활자화된 『겐지모노가타리』 현대어역 및 번안소설 중에서, 만화를 제외하고는 대중에게 가장 많이 팔린 작품이다. 2000년 문고본기준 누적판매 250만부라는 경이로운 판매부수를 기록하였으며, 80년대 이후에 등장하는 『겐지모노가타리』 현대어역의 선구적인 작품으로 평가할 수 있다. 다시 말해 『신 겐지모노가타리』는 기록적인 판매부수로 알 수 있듯이, 현대의 독자들이 천여 년 전에 쓰인 고전작품에 ‘위화감 없이’ 접근할 수 있는 루트를 제공하였다는 점에서 주목할 만한 가치가 있으며, 소위 현대의 ‘겐지문화’를 선도하는 역할을 수행하였음을 알 수 있다. 다나베 세이코의 『신 겐지모노가타리』는 원전에서 표현이 부족한 부분을 어렴풋한 암시를 소재로 전체적인 회화나 정경을 그려내는 작업, 즉 설명이 부족하여 이해하기 어려운 부분을 자신만의 언설(言說)로 ‘메우는 작업’을 통해 오래된 고전작품을 현대독자들에게 생생하게 전달하고 있다. 또한 원전의 상당 분량을 차지하고 있는 와카를 그대로 옮기지 않고, 삭제하거나 함축된 의미를 풀어 대화체나 설명체로 바꾸어 장면을 구성하고 있다. 또 원전 상의 남녀 간 만남을 그리는 장면에서 구체적인 성(性) 묘사나 인물의 심정 등은 상세히 언급되지 않는다. 이러한 부분을 『신 겐지모노가타리』에서는 현대적인 감각을 바탕으로 충분히 가필(加筆)하여 독자의 흥미를 끌고 있다. 이러한 작업을 통해 원전에는 다소 전형적이며 평면적으로 그려졌던 인물을 통일적 개성을 지닌 입체적 인물로 재창조해낸다. 이처럼 다나베의 『신 겐지모노가타리』는 원문에 충실하면서도 현대의 독자들의 감성에 호소할 수 있는 번역을 통해 천 년도 더 전에 창작된 고전작품 『겐지모노가타리』를 새롭게 해석하여 현대독자들 앞에 선보이고 있다.
Shin Genji Monogatari is the best seller among the adapted pieces of Genji Monogatary which were put into printing after modern times, not including comics. It set a phenomenal record of 2.5million which is the accumulated number of sold copies in the 2000’s pocket edition. This piece can be evaluated as a leading work of Genji Monogatary among the modern language translations after 1980’s. As we can know from the outstanding number of sold copies, it is worthy of notice that Shin Genji Monogatary has provided a way for modern people to approach to classic literature without feeling a sense of incompatibility and it has done a role of leading the modern “Genji Culture”. New Tale of Genji of Seiko Tanabe conveys modern readers old literary works vividly through Working to make good a deficiency of expression in Tale of Genji. Specifically, New Tale of Genji constitute a scene by changing Waca to a conversation or text in Tale of Genji. Also, when a man and a woman is being together, specific sexual description and character's feeling are not expressed. Through this work, flat characters are born again to round characters. It can be shown that the writer Tanabe who has various winning records such as Akutagawa Prize has put all his efforts to interpret the essence of Japanese classic literature, Tale of Genji. in a new perspective and suggest it to modern people. In other words, New Tale of Genji was reinvented by author, Seiko Tanabe with modern sense.
