During the New Order Period under President Suharto (1966-1998), depoliticization of Islam emerged as one of the critical debates in society. It seemed that President Suharto was adamant in his principle to detach Islam from the realm of politics. Yet, many people suspected that, in the latter half of the New Order period, Suharto changed his religious order by politicizing Islam and making it more privileged than other religions. By reexamining Suharto's policies on Islam, this paper reveals to what extent Suharto deviated from his own principle and see whether he actually abandoned his own principle. Through this examination, the author tries to analyze to what degree current Islamic moves in the post-Suharto period are consistent with the Islamic policies established during the New Order Era.
