“Literature of the Japanese-occupied Northeast Region" (LJNR) is a special sphere in Chinese modern literature. In 1931, Japan occupied the northeast area of China and established Manchuria, a puppet regime. From then on, the northeast area was separated from the territory of China territory and became the colony of Japan. LJNR was formed under such historical circumstances and had to outlive the political control of the colonizers to further its development. Despite a degree of compliance with the colonizers, LJNR was closely connected to modern Chinese literature and showed strong individual characteristics. More than two million immigrants from Korea lived in Manchuria, among whom were a great number of Korean modern writers which then closely links this literature with that in Korea. This paper presents a general survey of LJNR in addition to illustrating the achievements and defects in the studies conducted on LJNR. This paper also suggests that more attention must be paid to LJNR in order to broaden research horizons.
