Previous studies of the Dongui bogam(東醫寶鑑), a medical text written by Heojun(許浚) in the 16th century, have focused mainly on his theories of Daoism and Confucianism. Earlier studies tended to stress the inner characteristic of both these philosophies without addressing the external characteristics this work in either case. This study suggests that the Dongui bogam was the scholarly product of a Choson dynasty Confucian. These Confucians ruled the dynasty rationally, and edited books on medical science, one of which was the Dongui bogam. In this book, religious aspects of Daoism was excluded because these elements were not in agreement with medical science or Confucianism. The Dongui bogam was also translated into the Korean vernacular script based on an obligation to govern the people. This was an example of Confucian enlightenment which was one external characteristic of Dongui bogam thought.
