Sino-Korean Cultural Exchanges Reflected in the Poems of Rhee Jongkyu in the Ming Dynasty Yang, Yu-lei* Rhee Jongkyu (李廷龜, 1564～1635), one of the four famous “wolsangkyetaek” (月象谿澤) Hanmun (漢文) writers in Korea in the middle of the 16th century, had been to the Ming Dynasty four times as an envoy. In addition, he was also appointed seven times by the Joseon government to escort the diplomats from the Ming Dynasty. His appointments as envoy and as escort were mainly based on his excellent skills in writing Chinese poems and articles, which resulted in his close friendship with government officials as well as many scholars of the Ming Dynasty. The historical events not only demonstrate details about Sino-Korean cultural exchanges in the Chinese tribute system, but also show that the political relationship between the two countries was strengthened through these cultural activities in the Ming Dynasty.
