This paper intends to comparatively study the notions of ChungSŏ in three thinkers as Zhuxi(朱熹), Ito Jinsai(伊藤仁齋) and Chŏng Yagyong(丁若鏞). Zhuxi, a famous neo-Confucianist, interpreted the concept of ChungSŏ as the phrase of ‘Iligwanji(一以貫之).’ For him, if we achieved the state of Chung(忠) as ‘Liil(理一)’, we could naturally accomplish the state of Sŏ(恕) as ‘Bunsu(分殊).’ However, while Ito Jinsai, a thinker of Kogaku(古學), acknowledged Zhuxi's concept of Chung, he differently interpreted the concept of Sŏ. For Ito Jinsai, the concept of Sŏ was interpreted as understanding the other according to the other's standpoint, not according to our standpoint. As a result, his concept of Sŏ was founded on our concrete relation with the other. Meanwhile Chŏng Yagyong proposed a more synthetical thesis. Criticizing Zhuxi's notions of seeing ChungSŏ as separate notions of Chung and Sŏ, he argued that the concept of ChungSŏ ultimately leads to one concept, namely Sŏ. According to his notion, the concept of ChungSŏ was interpreted as ‘faithful Sŏ.’ Moreover, it is important to note that his concept of Chung could be connected with the concepts of ‘Jisŏng(至誠)’, ‘Junghwa(中和)’, and ‘Jungyong(中庸), since the concept of Chung was interpreted as such concepts as Sŏng(誠) and Jung(中)
